About Penelope Chilvers: Penelope Chilvers designs footwear and accessories that you’ll surely fall in love with. She originally trained as a painter at the Byam Shaw School. However, Penelope received a scholarship to complete an MA at the Complutense University, Madrid. This changed her life.
For several years, she lived in the city of Barcelona as a designer and painter. She even collaborated with local artists, artisans, and woodturners. While in Barcelona, she bought her first Spanish riding boots. Made from natural leather, the Spanish artisans built the footwear to last. She would wear her riding boots during lunch breaks as she enjoyed riding in the National park of Collserola.
Back in England, she commissioned Spanish artisans to make an equestrian boot to her own specifications. Today, this boot - the Long Tassel boot - remains our store's favourite. In fact, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, famously wore the riding boots in 2004. Made from Spanish vegetable-dyed leather, she wore the colour conker brown. She has worn the boots on several occasions, from a public engagement in County Durham to trekking up the Himalayas. Built to last, the riding boots have a feminine appeal.

No Plastic: At Penelope Chilvers, there is no single use of plastic on footwear. Even the soles are made of Goodyear welt rubber to ensure all-terrain wear. Instead of plastic, the artisans use repurposed ocean plastic for the fabric uppers. When it comes to packaging, they do not use plastic either. They use biodegradable packaging to protect the environment. Not using plastic also reduces the number of new materials used and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
Made in Spain: Shoes made by Spanish artisans have a great international reputation.
